New Garbage Bag Designed for Curbside Scavengers
Amsterdam design studio WaarMakers has created a new garbage bag to help extend the life of useful items and promote sustainable behavior.
The "Goedzak" is an appealing, see-through garbage bag designed specifically for easy curbside scavenging and salvaging.
"Whether it’s that purple vase your sister-in-law got you, or that particular coffee-pad-loving coffee machine (you know the one) that’s been lying in the basement for ages; everybody owns items that are no longer of value to them," says designer Simon Akkaya on the WaarMaker website.
"These items disappear in grey garbage bags and end up on trash piles," he says.
Rather than trash perfectly useful items, the Goedzak encourages owners to place them in the see-through garbage bags and put them out on trash day. The bag signals to passersby that the items are in good condition and free for the taking.
The creators of the Goedzak have also partnered with a second-hand store franchise to run a pilot pick-up and recycling pilot program.
"They will pick up the bags and put the usable goods in their stores. The rest is sorted and/or recycled," Akkaya told the Co.Exist website.
