Brooklyn-based clothing label Flint and Tinder has designed a sweatshirt built to last a lifetime– or at least 10 years.

The 10-Year Hoodie is a premium unisex zip-up hoodie made entirely in America. If the sweater rips or tears during the first 10 years you own it, the company will mend it for free.
“It'll grow into you the way your favorite sweatshirt should — getting softer with wear, keeping you warm and snuggly, and stacking up stories along the way,” the company says on its Kickstarter campaign page, which has already far surpassed its funding goal of $50,000.
Flint and Tinder says that the 10-Year Hoodie project represents a battle cry against the manufacturing business model known as “planned obsolescence,” which is when manufacturers make clothing items designed to wear out.

“It's a common trick of the trade. It's one of several techniques companies secretly use to ensure that if you like what you've bought, you'll be forced to replace it soon,” the company says.

Rather than frequently replacing older clothes--the bulk of which end up in landfills--Flint and Tinder hopes consumers will embrace a return to old-fashioned American manufacturing and the idea of well-made clothing designed to last a lifetime.

“Not everything should be disposable. It's time to buy less, but get more,” the company says.
